Try to Learn From Your Mistakes

I make mistakes all the time. I’m not perfect. I like to think that I am, but I’m far from it.

I haven’t gotten any names wrong in a long time, but it doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen again.

Lately, my mistakes have been minor and frustrating.

Before I hand in anything to my editor, I make sure I edit my copy and read the story over a few times. I want things to go smoothly for both of us. The last thing I want to do is leave a stupid mistake in my story.

As much as I edit and read myself, there are always minor things that my editors and I find before the story gets in the paper. No story is ever perfect. It’ll always be that way. You can expect it and strive for “perfection,” but it’ll never happen.

Some tips I’ve found healthy include:

  • Never guess and don’t ever assume. Do your job and look it up.
  • Don’t rely on your editors to catch your mistakes. Don’t be sloppy or lazy. They’ll notice anyways.
  • If you are having trouble editing, try printing out your stories and editing them manually with a pen/pencil.
  • Never rely on a spell checker. They will be the downfall of your editing skills.
  • Always double check press releases. Chances are there is at least one mistake in it.
  • Practice makes perfect.

And make sure you don’t give up. I’m still learning things all the time.
