The Holiday Weekend Roundup story

There are many kinds of stories that come with different events and special weekends.

One of my favorite stories to do is the holiday weekend advance and roundup.

Not only is it nice to have a “feature” for the paper, but it keeps you on your toes.

Unlike other papers, the Chronicle goes all out when it comes to holiday weekend travel stories. I covered the most recent Labor Day Weekend with a before (Labor Day Summer fades into the sunset) and after (Crash kills Ashford woman) story.

For us, we cover it on the state and local level. Most of our towns have resident state troopers, but we call the local police departments to both see how they think things will be and, then, how things turned out.

It’s stressful, yet really fun. I really like talking to the police departments. It keeps them on their toes and gets them used to us calling them on a regular basis, never mind whatever accident/incident happens.

With the state PIO, it’s a whole different story. I call them probably two to three times a week. They know me by name. We have to call them so much because of all of the towns that we cover having resident troopers.

Weekend roundup stories are great, though. It’s unlike a regular news story, in that you have to really creative with it. It’s not going to win a Pulitzer, but it really pays to switch it up from the hard news.

It’s also nice to be able to tell our readers what the traffic situation could be like and what to look out for.
