Stealing From Romenesko 12/28

Jim Romenesko, who left Poynter in November, has aggregated and blogged news about layoffs, circulation drops, new investments, scandals, critisms, and media change both digital and print for the past 12 years. His messy departure  was in the news for a long time, but has quieted down now. He’s continued what he did at jimromensko.com.

The problem was over Romenesko’s attribution practices that he had used since he started at Poynter. He aggregated, but that wasn’t the point of it all. He was driving traffic to other sites and journalists and still is. He has everything you would want to know in one spot. If you know someone who does it better, please let me know.

Romenesko, who also runs the blog “Starbucks Gossip,” is the place to go for everything media. Even if you aren’t a journalism or communications major, everything he has on his site is something you need to know about. If you are on Twitter, you will see his posts retweeted endlessly. His reach is endless, even on Facebook. Simply, he is the best. Poynter looks foolish for how they handled the situation. For a better understanding of what happened please read Romenesko’s explanation here.

Since I started this blog over a month after Romenesko started his own site, I am a little behind in sharing some of the stories that I found really interesting.

I found no value in saying I found the stories on my own since anyone could have figured out where they came from. Plus, it will help me sleep at night knowing I’m not taking credit for something that I didn’t work on.

This post from Romenesko about a Providence College student who got flack from a welfare column from her time spent as a Walmart cashier in her home state of Maine. To go straight to Christine Rousselle’s column click here via The College Conservative.

Romenesko also tweeted this story about New Haven schools spokesman Chris Hoffman grabbing the camera of New Haven Independent reporter Melissa Bailey. This happened just before Christmas and Hoffman had a letter of resignation by last Friday. Everyone has picked up this story including the Huffington Post and The Hartford Courant’s Rick Green. The kicker to this story is that Hoffman is a former reporter.

I found those stories interesting, but I know I missed some big ones, so if you have your own that I missed just throw them in the comments. I think I am going to highlight a few stories each week from Romenesko for this blog. Even if I don’t do it each week, I will probably talk about stories from Romenesko either way.

Disclaimer: I emailed this post to Jim last night to make sure that it was okay by him.

“Jonathan, It looks right-on to me. Thanks,” he said in the email back this morning (From his iPhone).
